This character came far and away from any original plans I had for him. Initially Mars was a one-shot jerk who would insult Noah's fashion sense and pay at the hands of a woman's closet scorned.

But the strip had other plans.

Mars became the one truly positive force in Noah's life. While the rest of the world passively/ actively questions or condemns Noah, Mars embraces unconditionally. That is why, out of all the characters

It had to be him.

Best

While I'm making references "Heart Gear" sounds like a penultimate Keyblade.

And this may very well affirm that the clothing IS magical.
Which doesn't affirm or deny Noah's potential trans-ness.

This Mars guy looks like an Earthbound/Mother character, and he even uses a bat.

Intentional?

You might want to try Mother 3 as well.
It was recently translated by fans, and you might enjoy it.

Heartrendering you say? Just how many hearts does it render? And when it's rendered them, what does it do with them?

Sorrysorrysorry ^_^;
I'll be sure to look into this Earthbound series you speak of!

It's one of the phrases used in the commmerical(s) for it, although I might have mangled it.

On another subject, have you ever considered opening a site to host Material Girl?
Also Noah is an Androgynous person (or he looks like one) wearing 'cursed' clothing (Like that Calvin and Hobbes Sunday comic when a bunch of clothes make him go to schook)

I think you're thinking of heartrending ^_^;

And yes! I have! I'm planning to begin construction shortly after the dramatic conclusion! I'll be sure to announce it's arrival.

As for your summary of Noah: you've got it. To a T.

Sorry I can't really remember him. But this was as usual an excellent strip - I love the grittiness and dramatic power of your pencil work - next episode - Smack down yes?

^_^; It's okay.

Yes, Noah went on two seperate dates with Mars (though his real name was never mentioned.) The first time ended with Ribbon giving Noah's number away, and the second ended with swing dancing.

Right now part of me thinks Mars is a (potential) figment of Noah's imagination, too. Yes, even after he apparently smacked someone with a baseball bat. :)

You have done the impossible again.

Two simultaneous heroes in two simulations stories rescuing one person who is simultaneously a boy and a girl while simultaneously keeping Ribbon imaginary for those readers who don’t believe as well as keeping him real for those who need to believe. Even Bill Watterson doesn't combine so many things at the same time.

Do you have a split personality?

I think it just comes from being a CDer. Trying to balance being male and female simultaneously puts a person in that split mindset...

You are going to need more to split into a dozen to tie up all of the events while keeping everyone happy. I am glad it was you because I have never being able to finish a story in my life.

Now I was thinking about Mars being the kind of hero who typically ends up with the girl. Do you think he would like Noah's sister?

A number of people have shown interest in Noah's sister. Though I don't see why. Her absence is much more of a character than her presence could ever be.

You are right in naming Mars the romantic interest. ^_^ Despite Noah's male-ness, I see no reason for him not to foster some sort of relationship.

In regard to endings: I've been reading Mr. McKee's excellent book "STORY" which in detail discusses the severe importance of an ending. Without a climax, there is no story. Everything builds to that moment. If a writer starts a tale without the end in mind, all actions will seem mundane, trivial, without purpose. And the audience has no patience for that.

I can't recommend enough Robert McKee's book. It's a veritable Bible for storytellers everywhere.

Now I have to read a book? I suppose the best writers are actually good readers and this guy looks pretty famous.

Some people may have alienated their sisters and still might like to be friends. You did such a good job with Noah and his mother they may hope you can bring the sisters together also.

Ah... you bring up a good point about the inter-family relations. One of my favorite moments from Abstract Gender involved something along these lines: [link] . Check it out. The series has its flaws, but overall some real good stuff going on here.

So I just happened to stumble upon your comic and it's absolutely adorable. I'm really loving the story and the artwork and I think you've just done a fantastic job. If a compilation of these comics were available for sale, I would totally buy a copy.

Also, Mars is making rather fine use of his namesake, eh?

It depends. I'm going to submit it to some specific publishers, just to tantalize them with the possibility of being the very special ones to publish Material Girl.

But if that fails (or I simply grow impatient) I'll self-publish and go through the internets.

Though I might get in contact with some local Comic Shops.

Again great job implimenting the non idealistic world of Mars into the picture. I still think that he has that carefree clueless attire to his character tho. I mean he is a great character but he still has that carefree smile on his face in Pannel 1 and then in PAnnel 3 the way he holds himself it looks like ( to me ) he's not worried about life as long as there's someone by his side to share a burdden with. Granted life is but a mystery to most unusual people. Some people crave attention some dispute otherwise. There there are some like who I believe Mars represents who are welcome with open arms to anyone who is lost in the world and they try thier best to make that person feel accepted and care for them as you've shown Mars to do taking Noah shopping getting her new clothes aswell as taking her out on the town.

Again I'm rambling... But yes thats how I think wether or not people agree with me or you agree with me. And my idea still stands... Make and submit Holiday theme Material Girl strips... Like could be 5 pages long as far as I care... Just something short that can be played with.

These artworks I assume would be one full page view of an event happening? Like say one page would be halloween the next page Noah opening an Xmas gift, another would be a Prom, ect ect?

Something tells me if Noah dressed up for halloween it'd end up being a cat girl or a witch ^-^

I'll have to keep these ideas in mind...

I already hit Christmas. And a dance would be tricky. But Halloween would be a hoot and summer fun on the beach would be very nice!

A witch you say? ^_^ Possibly with striped stockings.

Doesn't have to be full comic material either. Could be like "center folds" kind of ideal. A two page spread of a still shot. So the "back to school dance" if you were to do one at start of school year would be IMO Noah slow dancing with Mars and people around them.

Would it be halloween without the purple black striped stocking witches? xD
