"As long as my nakama lives, the pain I go through will mean nothing to me." - Shidyk D. Shade
I really like the dynamics of the composition in this one; the directional forces established by the curve of Toadstool's body, the direction of Bowser's gaze, and the slight angle of the perspective. I also think the lighting works really well.
But... I also really enjoy the mildly perverted humor of the original piece and the expression on Bowser's face. There was something cute and silly about it that I really liked.
I'm curious what media were used in this piece? Also, the extension of the right-hand chain out of the format is a really nice touch
I'm still torn. Was that a good RPG, or did I just like it because I was a misty-eyed kid who had never played an RPG before? Over-rated or justifiably-loved?

Short answer: Watercolors
Long answer: The media was pretty involved. First I went through various drafts of composition based on the original (Pencil and paper), then inking (Sakura Microns of course!), followed by a color test in photoshop, and finally a Color field (using Cotman Watercolors)that I placed behind the lineart via PS. Once I got to this point, I could directly manipulate the color of the lineart (which is something I really enjoy), and also change the brightness and saturation of the different color areas behind the lineart.
As for dynamics: I had to flip the entire piece, as it originally read from Toadstool across. It was surprisingly stagnant and I was disappointed. When flipped, I was delighted to find the chain leads the eye down to Bowser, and up to Toadstool's form, which curves around and allows the viewer's eye to peruse the picture.
Finally: In the original the focus was on Bowser. In this one I feel it's more about how Princess feels. But I agree with you, there are some good things in the first piece that didn't make it to this version.
