The Future of SoE

Three steps ahead of an Avalanche. That's what I've heard being a freelance illustrator is like.

I think it's an apt metaphor.

I apologize for the lack of an SoE update this week.   The Animation project has blown a hole in my timeline, and now I'm playing major catch up.   Which might lead few to question my next statement:

I'm seriously considering switching SoE to an episodic animation.

Let me explain why.

1.)  Time
While animation does take an incredible amount of time, the majority of this is taken up on the front end.   Building the graphics and movie modules in Flash took me three full days of work, but animating them only ate up a few hours at the end.      Continuing episodes in the castle, for example, would now be fairly quick.  Which leads me to the second point:

2.)  Story
Doing animated episodes allows me to cover much more of the story much faster than hand drawn comic pages.   A big concern I have is how long it will take to tell the whole story I have planned, and in the current format we're talking years... possibly a decade.   And in all honesty, this might mean that the story never reaches its conclusion.  My hope is that an animated format will allow me to convey much more story much faster, meaning more like a two-year ride than a twenty-two-year one.

3.)  Development
I've gotta consider my career options, and getting better with Flash means more opportunities for me as a freelance artist.  But even more so than that, it allows me to focus on story beats and pacing, timing and the like in real time.   I already plan to intersperse SoE with my hand drawn art, but it'd be my bigger goal to do frame-by-frame hand-drawn kind of animation for "Cutscenes", possibly with voice acting ^_^;  But we'll see about that.   That might be too giant of a project to get into, but it's these kinds of explorations that led me to start this project to begin with.

So there's my logic.  I know this will upset some people, primarily because it doesn't feature my hand drawn art as predominantly.   But I'm trying to find ways to work around that, and am entirely open to ideas.  At the end of the day, I want to tell a great (and somewhat fanserviced) story, in the best way possible.

I'll do my best to keep everyone posted for the immediate future,
But look for another update this Saturday.

Best

well its nice to try new and wonderous apps to tell the tale of princess samus's captive trietment :), the thing i find with flash player is.....there is a lake of detail :(.
your hand drawn art has virbrent colour, emotion and the titbits of her captivty make the comic more enduring to fallow as i was hook from when you did the mushroom bounty page :).
however i am not the writer or the drawer and the other parts you have to do to the hand drawn masterpieces' of this exiting addiction you have made.

so this is really your desicion, just an opinion, the best of luck with what ever you try try to do, if you do go with the flash just throw a random panal for fun.
